Is there something in your life you’ve wanted to do for a long time? Do you put it to the back of your mind but it just keeps popping up into your thoughts?
Maybe it’s time to jump from an old working life to a new one, start a new business, become an entrepreneur? Well, maybe it’s time to take the plunge. Read on for some concrete reasons why!
No one wants to live a life of regret
If you keep putting off doing something you really want, you are setting yourself up for just that. Give it a go, or let it go!
Once you take steps to do something you are very passionate about and excited about the adrenaline kicks in
Often it’s the getting started that is the hardest. It’s so much easier to get yourself out of bed in the morning to do something you enjoy (spoken from a person whose safe haven and hiding place has always been under the covers).
There will always be some sort of reason not to do it
When one reason is no longer there, another one will pop up to take its place:
Money – Can’t afford it whilst the kids are at school, whilst the kids are at uni, with my partner only working part time, until the mortgage is paid off…
Time – Things are just too hectic… when they quieten down.
Clarity – I’m not sure what I want to do, but it isn’t what I’m doing now. (If this is the case, make a big effort to explore what you do want to do that will make you happy.)
Expertise/experience – I’ve never done it before. E.g. run my own business before. (Neither had the thousands of others who started. And if you asked all those people – even the ones who were unsuccessful – about regrets of doing it, I don’t think there would be many)
Focus on the reasons to do it rather than the excuses not to do it. And if it’s really important to you, how much respect are you showing yourself by being so dismissive of it?
While your attention is divided, your progress suffers
I hear examples like this a lot. People who continue to work full time and build up the new business in their “free time.” When the new business is built up enough, they will leave their full time jobs. Guess what happens? They never have the time, energy and dedication to pursue what they really want because their attention and focus is divided.
Longer you put it off, the longer you have to convince yourself and let others convince you not to do it
It’s a bit like parachuting. Standing on the edge of the plane looking down and putting off jumping only to let the fear and excuses not to do it build. If you don’t want to do it, don’t torture yourself by getting up in the plane, putting the gear on and getting ready to jump. If you really don’t want that dream enough, don’t wish and torture yourself, let it go.
Things happen quicker when you are focused
So focus on what you want and take directed action towards getting it today.
Jumping out of your comfort zone gives you a sense of urgency that is never there otherwise
It’s amazing how financial commitments, responsibilities, and fear can be great motivators to get you moving. Use these to your advantage. I’m not saying stress yourself out till you can’t breathe, but a bit of a healthy stretch is good for you.
There’s never a perfect time
It’s always going to be tough. Your feelings will ebb and flow and you will feel like giving up. But the rewards are worth it all if it’s something you really want.
If you don’t do it someone else will
